Vito Acconci
4-Story Table, 1984
10’ x 12 1⁄2’ x 7 1⁄2’

A table-within-a-table-within-a-table-within-a-house.

A children’s table, 15 inches high, the seats of its chairs 9 inches high; the backs of its chairs support, in turn, a conventionally sized table, 30 inches high, the seats of its chairs 18 inches high; the backs these chairs support, in turn, a beamed ceiling which in turn supports a peaked roof.

The building method is basic 2x4 construction, the roof structure 2x6’s; the boards are bolted together – the materials are tacked on, the unit stacked together. The chairs are ladder-back chairs, the ladder-rungs extended to the fronts and sides of the chairs, so that it’s possible to climb from one level of table to another, up to the ceiling, which functions as a sleeping alcove under the roof.

The wood is varnished, for preservation; the structure can be used indoors (as, basically, a table) or outdoors (as, basically, a house). The undersides of roof and ceiling are stained blue, to notate a top, a limit, a sky, for the self-enclosure.
